Born in Kanagawa in 1979.
After completing his graduate studies in architecture at the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2003, he joined KOKUYO, where he became the youngest-ever Head of the Creative Design Division in 2018. There, he led the expansion of the company’s design domain by bridging the realms of WORK and LIFE, and by navigating across scales—from product to architecture, from intimate experience to urban systems.
In May 2023, he founded WATARU ARCHITECTS to initiate a new phase: one that not only responds to, but actively reshapes the flows of society and emerging value systems. The studio’s mission is to traverse boundaries—between rural and urban, product and architecture, software and hardware—and to blend seemingly disparate elements into discontinuous empathy that gives form to next imaginaries.
